The search for the aircraft has centered on a 33,000-square-mile area of the southern Indian Ocean off western Australia, which is thought to be the location where the plane would have crashed down after running out of fuel. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean, covering about a fifth of the water on the earth's surface.
