A. With a population of 2.7 million, Toronto is Canada’s most populous city and the capital of the province of Ontario. Ottawa is Canada’s national capital. St. John’s, Newfoundland, was established about 200 years before Toronto was founded as the town of York in 1793.
B. Lake Ontario, Wyandot for “Lake of Shining Waters,” is surrounded on the north, west, and southwest by Ontario and on the south and east by New York. Ontario borders the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota. Most of those borders are water boundaries.
C. Detroit lies north of Windsor across the Detroit River which separates Canada from the United States. The river gets its name from the French phrase “le detroit du lac Erie,” meaning the strait of Lake Erie. The city of Detroit was founded by the French in 1701.
D. The University of Toronto and Ryerson University say applications from U.S. students are up more than 80 percent. While some of the U.S. students cite an “inclusive environment,” Canadian universities also are generally less expensive with reputations for high quality.
