C. Cairo is the capital and largest city in Egypt. With more than 20 million people, Cairo’s metropolitan area is the most populous in the Middle East. The Great Pyramid was built overlooking the ancient capital of Memphis, which is about 12 miles south of Cairo’s city limit and is part of the metro area.

Silt deposits from the Nile made the surrounding land fertile because the river overflowed its banks annually. Most Egyptians live in the Nile River Valley which is not considered part of the Sahara.
