A. Mont Blanc means “white mountain” and the height of its snow and ice-covered peak varies. But, the mountain is the highest in the Alps, which is the highest and most extensive mountain range in Europe. Mont Blanc’s summit is in the middle of what is generally considered to be the border between France and Italy.
B. Iceland is considered part of Europe while its nearest neighbor Greenland is part of North America. At a memorial ceremony, a bronze plaque was mounted on a bare rock once covered by Okjökull - the first Icelandic glacier killed by climate change. The plaque warns the rest of Iceland’s glaciers face the same fate over the next 200 years.
B. The Himalayan Mountains are home to the third largest deposit of ice and snow in the world. A study earlier this year reported the melting of billions of tons of the ice that supplies water to much of Asia. The accelerated melting is swelling runoff and flooding, but scientists say water shortages will follow as the glaciers lose mass.
A. Antarctica has about 90% of the world's ice that holds about 70% of the world's fresh water, but most of the continent is a polar desert receiving almost no precipitation. The UN report said the world ocean has absorbed 90 percent of the extra heat trapped by the atmosphere. The warming ocean is speeding up melting of polar sea ice that helps hold back glaciers on Antarctic and Arctic coastlines.
