A. In 2007, a student killed 32 people and wounded 17 others on the campus of Virginia Tech in the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. In 2012, 28 people died in Connecticut in an attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. Seventeen were killed in 2018 in a Florida high school, and 15 died in a Colorado high school in 1999. Guns are the leading cause of death among Americans aged 1-19 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
C. In 2017, 61 people died in Las Vegas, Nevada, after a 64-year-old man opened fire from a hotel room on a music festival. The attack left 877 people injured, 411 of them from gunfire. A year earlier, 50 people died in the second-deadliest shooting, which took place at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub. Nearly three out of every four homicides in the United States involves guns.
C. India’s civilians own about 71 million small arms, or 5.3 guns for every 100 people. There are nearly a billion more people in India than the U.S., and there are even more people in China, which has nearly 50 million civilian guns or 3.6 per 100. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country, and it has 82,000 guns – 0.03 for every 100 people. Brazil, the fifth most populous nation, has about 17 million guns, or 8.3 per 100 people.
A. In almost every documented case of active shooters from 2000 to 2013 warning signs were given. Nearly all mass attackers in 2018 made threatening or concerning communications. The night before the Oxford shooting, the 15-year-old recorded a video in which he discussed killing students, police said. Oxford’s school chief has called for an outside investigation into how educators dealt with the situation.
