C. Namibia and its neighbor South Africa are home to more than a third of the world’s approximately 7,000 cheetahs. The two countries plan to send at least 20 of the cats to India as part of an attempt to assure the survival of the highly endangered cheetahs.
D. It is believed cheetahs started migrating 100,000 years ago from North America across the Beringian land-bridge into Asia. Scientists also believe the North American pronghorn “antelope” evolved into the world’s second-fastest mammal to escape those ancient predators, which later became extinct in this hemisphere.
D. The numbers of leopards, Asiatic lions and tigers living in India have increased in recent years. But, all of these predator species are threatened by loss of habitat and poaching. There are concerns that the cheetahs being reintroduced into India could be preyed upon by the other large cats.
C. India is a little more than a third the size of the United States, with about 1.39 billion people living on 3.3 million square miles, compared with 337 million Americans living on 3.8 million square miles.
