B. The oldest human fossils anywhere in the world date to around 2.8 million years ago - a partial jaw discovered in modern-day Ethiopia. Archaeologists believe that humans, including modern Homo sapiens, first evolved in Africa before spreading to Western Asia and the rest of the world. The ancient human remains in Georgia are the oldest found outside Africa.
C. Tbilisi is also Georgia’s largest city with 1.1 million people, or nearly a third of the country’s population. Ankara is the capital of Georgia’s southwestern neighbor Turkey; Yeveren is the capital of southern neighbor Armenia; and Baku is the capital of southwestern neighbor Azerbaijan.
D. Georgia lies at the intersection of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, and it was invaded by Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Mongols, Persians and Turks over the centuries, It was annexed by the Russia in 1800 and the Soviet Union in 1922. Georgia became independent in 1991. In 2008, it fought a war with Russia, which was backing separatists in Georgia.
C. The Caucasus Mountains run from the Black Sea on the northwest to the Caspian Sea on the southeast. The mountain range runs through southern Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. While most of Georgia’s territory is in Western Asia, it has strong cultural and historical ties to Europe. It wants to join the European Union and NATO, putting it at odds with Russian leaders.
