C. The emir of Qatar’s family has ruled the country since 1825. While Qatar is officially a semi-constitutional monarchy with an elected legislature, the emir retains so much power that it still considered an absolute monarchy.
D. Qatari citizens comprise only 11.6% of the people in the country. Hundreds of migrant workers died during construction for the World Cup. Qatari employers were accused of abusing workers, withholding pay and refusing to allow them to leave the country.
B. Qatar’s scorching climate made it impossible to hold the competition during the summer, when most national soccer leagues are inactive. This year’s tournament has forced leagues to shut down while their star players compete on national teams in the World Cup.
D. Canada, Mexico and the United States will co-host the tournament, with three-quarters of the games to be played in the U.S., including the final. It will be the first time World Cup games will be played in three different nations. In 2002, Japan and South Korea were co-hosts, the only other time the event wasn’t held in a single nation.
