B. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan and the most populous metropolitan area of the country with a population of more than 6 million people. It is located where the White Nile and Blue Nile join to form the Nile River which flows north to the Mediterranean Sea.
A. Britain and Egypt agreed in 1899 to joint rule of what is now Sudan and South Sudan, but in reality, it was ruled as a British colony until 1956. Since then, Sudan has endured multiple civil wars. The current conflict broke out last year between the biggest rivals in Sudan’s military government.

D. The United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf sent arms and support to the Rapid Support Force. Both sides in the conflict have been accused of war crimes as at least 20,000 people have been killed and 33,000 injured in the fighting. Famine and disease caused by the conflict are killing many more.
