The ships completely cross that ocean and the Red Sea to transit the Suez Canal and reach the Mediterranean Sea of the Atlantic Ocean. The longer route to Europe burns more fossil fuel, contributing to the global warming that is melting Arctic ice.
C. Arctic Ocean ice cover drops to its lowest point in September, near the time of the Autumn equinox and after the ocean has been warmed by long days of summer sun. Ice in the Arctic reaches its maximum in March, about the time of the Spring equinox and after freezing all through the dark days of winter.
