Common Core State Standard L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.
Senate votes to let ISPs sell your information
The Senate just approved a resolution that would kill an Obama-era internet privacy regulation that stopped cable and internet service providers from gathering and selling information about you. ISPs like Verizon, Comcast and AT&T will no longer need consent from customers to record their information and sell it to advertisers.
■Class discussion: Is it OK for internet companies to gather and sell detailed personal information about you? Why or why not? Does having personal information make it easy for advertisers, politicians or even fraudsters to manipulate you? Can you find examples of how this information has been misused? Do internet companies have too much power to invade your privacy? What can you do about it?
