Common Core State Standard L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.
Name-calling isn't uniting Americans
Cable news can be a food fight of political science terms. Often, though, the terms are used inaccurately. "When we say words like that, it dumbs down the discussion," says political science expert Fabiana Perera. She says we are much better off talking about specific issues instead of accusing others of being “communists” or “fascists” if they disagree with us.
■Class discussion: How well do you understand the political science terms like socialism, capitalism, democracy or autocracy? Do you or people you know use these terms loosely in political discussions? Does the misuse of these terms just confuse people about real issues? Do people also misuse science and medical terms? Do they understand what “critical mass” is really about?? Can they really diagnose “narcissistic personality disorder”?
