UAE Advises Citizens To Avoid Traditional Dress After Incident In Ohio
Officials in the United Arab Emirates are urging citizens take care how they dress outside the region after Ohio police approached an Emirati man wearing traditional robes, drew their guns, forced him to the ground, handcuffed and arrested him. A hotel desk clerk set off a false alarm when he mistakenly assumed the man who had come to the U.S. for medical treatment was “pledging his allegiance to ISIS" when he spoke Arabic on his cellphone in the hotel lobby. Police later apologized to the Emirati man.
■Class discussion: Should visitors to U.S. change the way they dress? What about Americans visiting other nations? Bermuda also issued a travel warning last week to citizens visiting the U.S. – particularly to young men – because of recent tensions over police shootings. Is there any reason for tourists to be wary of U.S. police? Why or why not? Is news of violence and terrorist attacks making people paranoid? What are the real odds of being killed by terrorists? What about the actual dangers to and from police? What really causes most sudden deaths in the U.S.?
