Ash fell like snow on Caribbean island after eruptions
There has been another "explosive event" at a volcano on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, with power outages and water supplies cut off. The La Soufrière volcano first erupted on Friday, blanketing the island in a layer of ash and forcing some 16,000 people to evacuate their homes. Scientists warn that eruptions could continue for days - or even weeks. In 1902, more than 1,000 people were killed when the La Soufrière volcano erupted.
■Class discussion: Millions of people live near active volcanoes all around the world. Could you? Where are volcanoes located in the United States? Is there anywhere you can live without danger of natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods or blizzards? What is the difference between being prepared for possible emergencies and living in fear? Have you ever talked to your family about what they would do in an emergency?
