What is NIE?

NIE is an acronym for Newspaper in Education. Newspapers are often referred to as “the living textbook”. They allow children to develop an understanding of their community and of the world around them. Teachers use the Duluth News Tribune in a variety of ways including spelling, reading, vocabulary, geography, and math. The habit of reading the newspaper provides the necessary practice to build reading and writing skills and develop an interest in the welfare of one’s community - valuable skills and attributes to carry students through life.

Who is NIE for?

  • Students in grades K through 12
  • Adult Education Centers
  • Public and Private Schools
  • Colleges and Universities

When & Where is NIE available?

In most school districts in Northeastern MN and Northwestern WI, throughout the school year (throughout the DNT’s newspaper market). We offer print editions every Wednesday and a unique E-Paper every day.

Why does the Duluth News Tribune support NIE?

  • To promote literacy and lifelong learning
  • To encourage newspaper reading
  • To provide up-to-date educational materials to students and teachers
  • To link readers to their communities and the world around them
  • To prepare students for active citizenship

The Duluth News Tribune NIE program is a non-profit program that is funded through various events through donations from businesses, subscribers, and the Duluth News Tribune. With the funding we receive for NIE, we can provide newspapers to classrooms at no cost to them. The Duluth News Tribune has been doing this for over 15 years.
