Georgia-based companies still face boycott threats
Civil rights and faith groups in Georgia are calling for corporate boycotts even after some companies publicly condemned the state's new voting law. Group leaders said they want Georgia-based companies like Delta and Coca-Cola to also support federal lawsuits against the Georgia law and federal voting rights legislation. But, voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams said she’d rather give corporations a chance to fund efforts like voter registration campaigns instead of boycotting the companies.
■Class discussion: Will corporate opposition, including Major League Baseball pulling the All-Star Game out of Atlanta, convince Republican lawmakers, rescind the voting law? Why or why not? Could it backfire and stir up Republican voters? When have boycotts failed or succeeded in changing laws or policies? Will the corporations and executives back up their statements by stopping campaign contributions to people who changed the voting law? How much political power should corporations have?
