Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

China shows off record-breaking robots at strategic games
The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games are underway in Beijing, featuring 51 events, 30 sports competitions, and more than 2,000 humanoid robots. They have already revealed that the technology can outrun and out-jump humans and that they are capable of sports such as table tennis and soccer. And the machines will also take on human tasks, such as connecting cables or handling packages. For China, the Games are another chance to showcase its competitiveness in the global tech race.■Class discussion: Does it surprise you that machines can run faster than the world’s best athletes, even if they are carted away on stretchers at the end of their race? Would you enjoy watching humanoid robots trying to play sports and then crash and burn? What are the real reasons for China’s robot games? Is China outpacing the United States in technologies such as robots, electric vehicles, and renewable power? How might we compete with the Chinese? Should we invest more in scientific research instead of cutting programs?
