Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.
EU might abolish daylight saving time
With 84 percent of its people telling pollsters they favor the change, the European Union is considering doing away with daylight saving time. The EU officially adopted daylight saving time in 1996, claiming the move cuts down on energy costs. But officials say the overall energy savings is small. They also say the claims that the time switch affects health and road safety are inconclusive.
