Whale scoops up Chilean kayaker and spits him out
Adrián Simancas was kayaking in Bahía El Águila in the strait of Magellan when a humpback whale gulped up him and his yellow kayak for a few seconds before spitting him out. He was unharmed. Simancas's father, Dell, who was kayaking with him, recorded the incident. "I thought it had eaten me," Simancas said. “But when I got out, I understood, of course, it was probably out of curiosity the whale had approached me.”
■Class discussion: Humpback whales grow up to 50 feet by feeding on tiny fish, krill and plankton, and they rarely interact with humans who almost drove them to extinction. Why did whaling ships hunt these largest mammals? Does the population recovery of whales and other threatened animals lead to clashes with people? Do rapidly growing human populations increase pressure on wildlife? Do you ever encounter wild animals where you live?
