Activities:

1. Create a timeline for the four leaders in today’s Mini Page. Draw a line and mark important years for each of the leaders. Put their names by their years. Now paste a newspaper picture or word(s) that tell something about each leader. Share your timeline with friends.

2. Draw a large profile of one of the leaders on a piece of paper. Paste newspaper words that describe or tell about your leader. Share with friends – see if your friends can guess the name of the leader from your words .

3. Collect newspaper stories about individuals who are fighting for civil rights or equal rights today. Who are the leaders today? What are the issues they are fighting for? How are they the same or different from the leaders in The Mini Page?

4. Which of the leaders in today’s Mini Page: (a) were born in to slavery, (b) fought for voting rights, (c) were forced to make difficult decisions at a young age, and (d) participated in large demonstrations?

5. Use the Internet to learn more about John Lewis. Review the work he has done over the past five years in the House of Representatives. Write a paragraph explaining how his work today evolved out of his early days of protest.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
