Activities:

1. Fold a piece of paper into three sections to make a brochure. On the front of the brochure, w rite the words “Memorial Day.” The inside of your brochure will have three sections. Paste newspaper words and pictures on each of the sections: People in the Military, Music, and Family Celebrations. Share your brochure with family members and friends.

2. Look in the regular ads and the classified ads to see how many musical instruments you can find, especially instruments that would be used in a marching band. Circle the instruments.

3. Find five Memorial Day celebrations in your community where you would expect to find a band playing. Which would you like to attend? Why?

4. Why are these important in the history of marching bands: (a) Thomas Jefferson, (b) a mace, (c) the Sousaphone and (d) Congress?

5. Use the Internet to learn more about John Philip Sousa. Make a list of at least seven of his marches. Use a music website or You Tube to listen to the marches you find. Which is your favorite?

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
