Activities:

1. Make a poster showing the interests of the two most recent first ladies, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush. Divide a piece of paper in two. On one side , write Michelle Obama’s name or draw her picture. On the other side, write or draw Laura Bush. Paste newspaper pictures and words that describe each first lady’s interests.

2. In the newspaper, circle pictures of seven items you think Melania Trump should take with her to the White House. Write sentences explaining your choices.

3. Pick three first ladies from today’s Mini Page. Now find a story in today’s newspaper that yo u think each would care about. Explain why.

4. What was special about each of these ladies who were part of the White House: (a) Harriet Lane, (b) Edith Roosevelt, (c) Jacqueline Kennedy and (d) Emily Donelson?

5. Use the Internet to learn more about Eleanor Roosevelt’s work on humanitarian and women’s issues. Then collect five newspaper stories about humanitarian and women’s rights. Write a letter to Eleanor describing how these issues have changed since she was in the White House.
