Florida investigates OpenAI, ChatGPT over fatal attack
Florida is investigating OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial intelligence program in a mass shooting that left two dead and six others wounded at Florida State University last year. "The chatbot advised the shooter on what type of gun to use, on which ammo went with which gun, on whether or not a gun would be useful at short range," Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said last week. His office said the investigation will determine whether "OpenAI bears criminal responsibility” in the shooting.
■Class discussion: Should a computer program be blamed for supplying information that a person requested and later used to commit a crime? Why or why not? Does it matter that it was an artificial intelligence program? Could you charge a search engine company if its information was used in a crime? Could you jail an author if a criminal copied the plot of their murder mystery? Why do some officials blame computer programs, video games, or movies for violent crimes but not gun makers and sellers?
