What is the impact of DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence?

Chines startup DeepSeek's launch of its latest artificial intelligence models, which it says are on a par or better than industry-leading models in the United States at a fraction of the cost, is threatening to upset the technology world order. After DeepSeek released research that showed it used only a fraction of the computer chips that other AI companies use to train their systems, U.S. tech stock prices plummeted. DeepSeek also has “open sourced” its computer code, allowing others to use it to build similar AI systems.

Class discussion: Has DeepSeek jumped ahead of much larger American AI companies? If other AI developers adopt DeepSeek's breakthrough technology, could that severely hurt advanced computer chip makers in the United States? The U.S. government banned the sale of those advanced computer chips to China. How did DeepSeek get some of those chips to build its system? Can companies often find ways to get around such bans? Could U.S. companies find ways to get materials restricted by China? Can the spread of knowledge be stopped?
