Identical twins climb back in time for mountaineering experiment
British twins Hugo and Ross Turner are preparing to climb Nepal's Mera Peak, as part of a study testing clothing performance in extreme cold and low oxygen conditions. The twins will compare the performance of modern high-altitude gear to the type used on a 1924 Everest expedition. The pair are known for several pioneering expeditions that included medical research studies. This expedition will study cognitive performance, stress levels, thermal insulation, and other medical differences between the "Adventure Guinea Pigs."
■Class discussion: What can studies of identical twins reveal that other medical research cannot? How could measuring the performance of human bodies under extreme conditions help researchers develop better medical treatments? Would you ever be willing to participate in medical research studies? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share information about your health history, activities, and lifestyle to help researchers develop treatments for disease? Is privacy about your health very important to you?
