L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

'Get off the road' - Drivers warn of hazards during snow storm
At a rest stop in Indiana, several truck drivers stopped because it was difficult to see the road during a nighttime winter snowstorm over the weekend. Darren Duncan was headed to Minnesota when he stopped to wait for the weather to improve. "Couldn't see no lanes at all, no lines, no lanes, no nothing," Duncan said. "That's why I got off." His advice to other drivers was simple: “Get off the road.” The massive weekend storm caused scores of traffic accidents across much of the country and many flight delays.■Class discussion: Is any job, like driving a truck in very bad weather, worth risking your life? Do many jobs have life-threatening hazards? What about firefighting, fishing, logging, construction, or policing? What training and experience does a person need to determine when a work situation is too dangerous? Should newer employees exercise more caution? Should they seek advice from more experienced co-workers? If a boss insists you perform a task you find too hazardous, should you refuse even if it costs your job?
