Journalists exit Pentagon rather than agree to new rules
Dozens of reporters turned in access badges and exited the Pentagon last week rather than agree to government-imposed restrictions on their work. News outlets were nearly unanimous in rejecting new rules imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that would leave journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they tried to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by Hegseth for release.
■Class discussion: Should newspapers and news networks only report what is approved by government or business officials? Why or why not? Do you believe people in power always tell the truth? Should journalists be able to freely question anybody to gather information for news reports? Should the government censor the news because of national security? What does the First Amendment to the Constitution say about freedom of speech and the press?
