What is the Day of the Dead?
Mexico's “Día de Muertos,” or Day of the Dead, is a celebration involving family and friends gathering to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have died. Dia de Muertos is traditionally celebrated on the Christian holidays of All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2. Some also link customs of the celebration to indigenous Mexican and Aztec influences.
■Class discussion: Do you find the skull and skeleton decorations of the Day of the Dead a bit scary? How about leaving the favorite foods of departed friends and family on their graves? Is it better to remember loved ones who died with somber rituals or with celebratory dancing and parades? How do most people in the United States deal with death? Do we avoid talking or even thinking about it? Is that healthy?
