How a British startup is drawing electricity from bacteria
British startup Bactery says its 'bacteria-powered battery' uses soil's naturally occurring microbes to generate a steady trickle of power, at least enough to replace 10 AA batteries. The company hopes to produce four watts of electric current from a cubic meter soil from batteries with an anticipated lifespan of 30 years. Scientists have been experimenting with producing electricity from microbes since 1911.
■Class discussion: Bacteria is the among oldest and most abundant lifeforms on Earth, and it is necessary for all other life on the planet. Why do we have about as many microorganisms as human cells in our bodies? What vital functions do microbes perform for us? How do plants rely on microorganisms? Doctors use antibiotics to battle bacteria that cause serious illness. Could those drugs also disrupt our body’s microbiome?
