Activities:

1. Draw four large squares on a piece of paper. In each square, draw a picture of a service dog helping its owner. Paste newspaper words under the picture that describe the dog and how it helps people.

2. Find three newspaper stories of people who are facing challenges. Paste each story on a page in a notebook. Under the story, write a paragraph describing how a service dog might be able to help the person.

3. Collect newspaper stories about dogs or other animals helping people. These may be service animals or non - service animals. Write about the traits and characteristics of the helping animals in each story.

4. How are these important to service dogs: (a) calm temperament, (b) socialization, (c) Dorothy Eustis and (d) foster families?

5. Under the Americans With Disabilities Act, only dogs, and under special circumstances miniature horses, can be designated as “service animals.” However, different animals can be therapy animals and emotional support animals. Use the Internet to learn about other support animals. Write about the three most unusual support animals you find.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand the interactions of animals and their environments. (Science: Life Science)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
