Activities:

1. Use newspaper pictures to make a poster showing different ways you can stay healthy. Share the poster with friends. Have them add any of their own ideas.

2. In the newspaper, circle pictures and words of over - the - counter medicines you can use to help you when you don’t feel well. Over - the - counter means you don’t have to get a prescription for the medicine. Some over - the - counter medicines include aspirin and cough medicine.

3. Collect news stories about illnesses, including those in other countries. Put a check mark by the illnesses caused by bacteria and a star next to those caused by viruses. Underline any medicine or treatments in the stories.

4. How are these important to bacteria and viruses: (a) digest ion, (b) cell, (c) vaccinations and (d) washing hands?

5. Use the Internet or books to learn about a scientist who helped us discover the causes of illnesses and how to prevent them. You might look at Arthur Fleming, Louis Pasteur , Joseph Lister, Gertrude Elion or Françoise Barré - Sinoussi. You may choose another scientist if you like. Write about your findings: Who was the person, when did he/she live, what did he/she discover, and how did the discovery improve medicine today?

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
