Activities:

1. With a friend, write five items in a Bill of Rights for your classroom. What rights would make your classroom work better?

2. Find three headlines in the newspaper that show the different branches of government: executive, legislative and judiciary. Paste the headlines on a piece of paper. Under each headline, explain what the story says about that particular branch.

3. With a friend, go through the newspaper and mark stories that show examples of the individual rights in the Bill of Rights. Write the number of the right on the headline. How many examples did you find?

4. How are these important to the Constitution: (a) three branches of government, (b) James Madison, (c) free assembly and (d) 27 amendments?

5. Think about the importance of freedom of the press. Find five stories in the newspaper that are important to you as a citizen. Write a brief discussion about why it is important for citizens to know the information in these stories.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students identify key ideals of the U.S.democratic/republican form of government. (Social Studies: Civic Ideals and Practice)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
