Extra time goal wins the World Cup for Spain
Ferran Torres’ first goal of this year’s World Cup tournament gave Spain a 1-0 win over now-dethroned champion Argentina in the final on Sunday. Torres came into the match at halftime as a substitute to score the goal of his life in the 106th minute after neither team could score during the regular 90 minutes. This is the second time Spain has won the World Cup. It won in 2010 and has qualified for 17 of the 23 World Cup tournaments ever held.
■Class discussion: Did you watch any of this year’s World Cup matches? Do you understand the rules of the game? Have you ever tried playing soccer? Argentina’s star Lionel Messi is worth an estimated $1.1 billion after more than two decades as one of the world’s best players. Are top professional athletes worth the millions they are paid in salaries, endorsements, and other business deals? How much do team owners make from athletes’ performance?
