Activities:

1. Draw a picture of a bicycle on a large piece of paper. Paste newspaper words about bicycle riding and bike safety around your pictures .

2. Circle pictures of bicycles in the newspaper. Circle children’s bicycles in red. Circle adult bicycles in blue. Put a star over the bicycle you would like to have.

3. Use the “Bike Safety Checkup” in today’s Mini Page to see how much your friends practice bike safety. Ask friends and family members whether they prac tice each of the safety rules. Which rules do most people observe? Which do people seem to ignore? Discuss your checklist with your friends.

4. How do these relate to bicycle use and safety: (a) pedicabs, (b) bike lanes, (c) bicycle trains and (d) Oregon and Washington, D.C.?

5. Write a story about yourself taking your bicycle on a long ride to visit friends. Describe situations that make riding a bicycle pleasant. Also describe situations where riding your bicycle is not a good experience.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self - expression and social interaction. (Physical Education)
