Common Core State Standard L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Dog greets intruder with toy during break-in
A San Diego couple was on fight home when a phone app alerted them, showing live video of a burglar breaking into their house. The intruder made himself comfortable, while Nash, the owners’ four-year-old golden retriever, repeatedly greeted him with a toy in his mouth and eagerly wagged his tail. The couple on the plane notified San Diego police and shared the video. Nash then greeted police officers with the toy and an invitation to play. A suspect was arrested outside the home.
■Class discussion: Nash was “way more well-behaved with that guy than he is with us,” his owner said. Would you rather own a gentle dog greeting everyone he meets or an aggressive watchdog scaring anyone who comes along? Why? Do you like or fear dogs? More than 14,000 years ago, human beings began turning which wild animal into dogs through selective breeding?
