Experts say U.S. companies aren't prepared to deal with cyberattacks
The Biden Administration made another plea to U.S. companies to tighten their cybersecurity defenses. But, many companies find it too expensive or difficult to properly secure themselves, making them vulnerable targets for potential Kremlin cyberattacks. While Russian-born cyberattacks are nothing new, many companies, including those in critical infrastructure sectors like transportation or agriculture, haven’t implemented rigid cybersecurity standards, in part because there aren’t always legal minimum standards to meet.
■Class discussion: Are you concerned about cyberattacks? What would happen to you and your family if a cyberattack wiped out banking information? Could you buy anything or pay bills? What would happen if the nation’s electrical grid shut down for a long time? Besides turning out the lights, what would happen if it shut off the pumps that supply us with water we need to survive and the fuel needed to stay warm and transport goods? Should there be stricter cybersecurity laws for business? Would it be worth paying more for goods and services?
