Would you eat this lab-grown 'beef rice'?
South Korean researchers have succeeded in growing beef cells in rice grains in what they say is a major step towards achieving a sustainable, affordable and environmentally friendly source of protein that could replace farming cattle for meat Professor Jinkee Hong of Yonsei University in Seoul said the "beef rice" is the first product of its kind. It uses grain particles as the base for cultivating animal muscle and fat cells.
■Class discussion: How much land, water, and energy does it take to raise cattle and process the beef in your hamburger? Does it make sense to grow protein-rich beef cells on grain instead? As the world’s population continues to grow and climate change impacts agriculture, do you expect to be eating different foods in the future? Can we keep raising and consuming food in the same way we are doing so now? Why or why not?
