7th grader saves bus driver and classmates
When Dillon Reeves, 13, saw his school bus driver become ill and pass out last week, he raced to grab the steering wheel and pumped the brakes to stop the vehicle from veering into oncoming traffic in Warren, Michigan. Then, as many of the other 65 students on the bus began to scream, Dillon called out, “Someone call 911. Now!” After emergency crews responded, the driver was rushed to the hospital, and students were transferred to another bus. When Dillon’s dad got a call from a police office, "My first response was, 'What the heck did he do?' And the officer said, 'No, your son is a hero," said Dillon’s very proud father.
■Class discussion: Why do some people respond quickly and calmly in an emergency while others freeze up or panic? Can anyone accurately predict how they would react in a serious emergency? First responders – police officers, firefighters and paramedics – are trained and routinely practice how to respond during emergencies. But, do they ever become overwhelmed in particularly hazardous or horrendous situations? A key part of Dillon’s heroics was his awareness of what was going on around him. How aware would you be in a similar situation? Would you notice someone passing out, or would you be distracted by your cell phone or friends?
