Compassion making a difference for the homeless

The winter months are the hardest time for those experiencing homelessness to get resources, especially in suburban communities. Where county and city resources don't exist in suburban areas, non-profit groups are stepping in to help. "Homelessness is becoming a lot more visible in the suburbs, because it's growing," said Heather Greenwood, who opened a cafe outside Denver which provides the homeless with free meals and help to find jobs or places to sleep.

Class discussion: Have you seen homeless people in your town? Are there any shelters for them in your area? What is your city, county or state doing to help people on the street survive? Some cities have passed laws to stop people from feeding or sheltering the homeless. What are the laws where you live? Do you know anyone who has lost a place to live? Does seeing homeless people make you uncomfortable? Why or why not? Can you imagine living outside in the winter?
