Ransomware seen as threat to November election

Ransomware attacks have disrupted government and business operations around the nation and with November's presidential election quickly approaching, federal authorities are raising the alarm that voting operations could be threatened. A Justice Department official said it's more likely a hacker would be able to prevent an election system from operating than to change votes. Either way, voter confidence is at stake.

Class discussion: Do you know how hackers use ransomware to extort huge payoffs from businesses and governments? Do you know how phishing scams get employees to reveal information that allows hackers to attack a computer system? Hackers recently used phishing to take over many Twitter accounts including that of Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate for president. Do you think hackers could disrupt the election? Should we spend more money to secure our election systems?
