What is fanning the flames of protest in Albania?
Student protests in Albania's capital, Tirana, escalated from peaceful summer demonstrations to violent clashes over corruption allegations and unhappiness with job prospects and education standards. The nation's unrest is part of a wave of student activism in Europe. French students staged weeks of protests, but older demonstrators took to the streets over the weekend. Most peacefully protested the soaring cost of living, but a violent minority spread severe damage across France.
■Class discussion: Why do so many people appear dissatisfied with their national leaders? Is frustration triggering violent protests? Or are some demonstrators just looking for an excuse for violence? How have nonviolent movements successfully changed laws and even governments in the United States and other countries? What is the best way to achieve reforms? Is it necessary to win public support to gain lasting change? Are violent protests likely to achieve popular support?
