Trump's phone habits could help spies listen in
Modern presidents need modern cell phones. But those devices can become a security nightmare in the White House — especially if the president doesn't follow best practices. President Donald Trump has two secure cell phones with limited functions. But, he reportedly uses a third unsecured phone to talk to friends. The New York Times reported that his phone calls have been intercepted by foreign spies looking for information to use to sway Trump’s opinions and decisions.
■Class discussion: How easy or difficult is it to intercept cell phone calls and texts? Police agencies are using a “StingRay” device to intercept calls. How does it work? Could criminals and spies build and use similar devices? How can a cell phone be used track your movements? Can anyone get software to track a phone? Do you care if someone can intercept your calls, texts and email? How could monitoring calls, texts and movements be used to silence political dissent? Is that happening anywhere?
