101-year-old holocaust survivor still fighting antisemitism
Antisemitism is one of the oldest forms of hatred in the world, dating back millennia, and it’s recently made a comeback in the United States. One in four Jews say they have faced antisemitism in our country in the past year, according to the American Jewish Committee. Ben Stern, 101, lived through nine concentration camps and two death marches. Decades later, the holocaust survivor is taking on modern day Nazis in the U.S. and marching against antisemitism.
■Class discussion: Have heard or seen any antisemitic comments, either in person or in the media? What have you learned about the Nazi holocaust, which murdered 6 million Jews during World War II? What do you know about violent attacks on U.S. Jewish synagogues in recent years? Are America’s political leaders and law enforcement doing enough to protect religious minorities from violence? What can you do to fight racial, ethnic and religious hatred in this country?
