Stadium cuts carbon by switching from beef to venison burgers

A soccer stadium in suburban London is using venison instead of beef to make burgers for fans. Stadium caterers claim the meat from wild deer causes 85 percent less carbon emissions than beef. They also said the switch lowers water pollution and improves land use. The venison burgers have proved to be more popular than beef burgers, they said. The catering company is switching to venison burgers at another 20 venues.

Class discussion: Would you be willing to eat wild venison instead of beef if it is better for the environment and climate? Why or why not? Brazil is the world’s largest beef producer. How has that impacted the Amazon Rainforest? It has been estimated that it takes 1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound of grain-fed beef in the U.S. Does that seem reasonable? How much water pollution is linked to cattle waste, particularly from feedlots?
