Spotlight on Sam Smith, 12th grade
Howard W. Blake High School, Tampa

Artist Statement
--Sam Smith

What inspires me to create is nature or natural form and how light interacts with it. Almost every piece I create deals with positive and negative space and how light or shadow is used. Pieces such as Log Brushmore and Peepwood use natural elements like wood to recreate the human form, or a caricatured rendition of such. Pieces such as Planked Tree and Illuminati are abstracted forms emulating nature in their use of raw wood. Collage shows a geometric form in a naturalistic, almost rock-like environment, which creates an interesting contrast. All of these pieces show a different angle on nature and how nature can be interpreted.
