For Grades 9-12 , week of Jan. 06, 2025

1. BIG TIME BANKRUPTCIES

This year has been challenging for many well-known companies, leading several to file for bankruptcy due to high inflation, changing consumer trends, and other issues like cyberattacks. At least 19 companies cut a combined 14,000 jobs because of bankruptcies. Retail closures surged, with over 7,100 store closures by November, a 69% increase from the previous year. Filing for bankruptcy often helps companies restructure and manage debt rather than shutting down completely. Some notable bankruptcies in 2024 include Big Lots, which plans to close its remaining 963 stores; Bowflex, which was bought by a Taiwan-based company after filing in March; and Express, which closed nearly 100 stores and was sold to WHP Global. Other companies like Joann and LL Flooring also filed for bankruptcy but managed to stay operational through new ownership or restructuring. Party City, Red Lobster, Spirit Airlines, Stoli Group USA, TGI Fridays, True Value, and Tupperware faced similar financial difficulties, with varying plans to recover or close locations. If you were going to write an article about one of these bankruptcies, how would you approach it? Who would you interview and what questions would you ask? Write a list of the subjects and questions as well as any sources you would use for further information.

2. HONDURAS’ STANCE

Honduran President Xiomara Castro has threatened to expel the U.S. military from a major air base in her country if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his plan for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. Castro’s warning is the first significant opposition from a Latin American leader regarding Trump’s deportation policy. The Soto Cano air base, which has hosted U.S. military operations since the 1980s, could be at risk, as Castro has said it would “lose all reason to exist” if the U.S. pursues deportations. This has led to some tense discussions within Honduras, as many Hondurans rely on remittances from those in the U.S. The situation is complicated by the U.S.’s importance as Honduras’ largest trading partner. Though Castro’s stance is bold, the country faces risks in challenging the U.S., and some officials are looking for a more diplomatic approach. As Trump’s second term approaches, how are the U.S.’s relationships with other countries, like many in Latin America, expected to change? Choose a country or region that has a prominent relationship with the United States and look up predictions from reliable sources about how that might change and the reasons for those changes. Then, write your own summary, synthesizing what you learned.

3. NEW MAJORITY LEADER NAMED

Senator John Thune, a conservative from South Dakota, has become the Senate’s new majority leader, taking over after Mitch McConnell’s long tenure. Thune, known for his calm and likeable nature, now faces the challenge of managing the Senate Republicans, particularly President-elect Donald Trump, whose expectations could be tough to meet. Thune will have to handle Trump’s controversial nominees and pass major legislation, all while balancing his leadership style with Trump’s sometimes unpredictable demands. He plans to improve Senate operations, restore regular working schedules, and preserve the filibuster, ensuring the Senate maintains its unique role in American politics. Despite some concerns about his ability to make tough decisions, Thune is seen as pragmatic and ready for the challenge. Using your newspaper or online, research Thune’s background as a Senator and how he’s voted on key issues of recent years. Write an article that summarizes what you’ve learned and how that might translate into his role as Senate Majority Leader.

4. NEW RISKS NAMED

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is calling for warning labels on alcoholic beverages, similar to those on cigarettes, because alcohol is linked to at least seven types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer. Alcohol contributes to 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually. Studies have shown that even moderate drinking can increase the risk of cancers like breast cancer and throat cancer. Despite this, alcohol producers and some health experts still argue that moderate drinking has cardiovascular benefits. While most people are aware of tobacco’s cancer risks, many are unaware of alcohol’s role in cancer. Changing alcohol labels would require action from Congress, but there’s strong industry opposition to such changes. Choose a side: for or against placing warning labels on alcohol. Research arguments and evidence for the side you chose, then write a paragraph summary of what you gathered, including facts and statistics to support the claims.

5. VIRAL MUSICIAN

Carter Vail, a 27-year-old musician, became famous by releasing funny, catchy songs on social media, like his hit “Dirt Man,” which helped him gain millions of followers. His success led to a record deal, a tour with rapper Yung Gravy, and even attention from celebrities. Despite his online popularity, Vail is also serious about his music, with albums that reflect his deeper, more thoughtful side. Vail loves creating in different areas, like music, fashion, and even potentially launching a variety show or clothing line. He doesn’t stress over making everything perfect, often posting quick, spontaneous content. While some fans initially got confused by his mix of serious and silly songs, he’s built a loyal fanbase that enjoys both. He’s also aware of the challenges of relying on platforms like TikTok, which he thinks might not be as helpful for artist promotion as people think. Despite his quick rise to fame, he remains focused on creating and having fun with his audience. If you were interviewing Vail for a talk show or podcast, what would you ask him and what would you hope to learn? Write a short summary of who Vail is along with your list of interview questions.
