How Screen Time Actually Affects Kids

Summertime is around the corner, and that means more free time for iPads and TV, right? The American Academy of Pediatrics hopes that answer is no. The group says parents should limit screen time for kids over 2 years old to two hours a day. But some parents and experts says it depends on what kids are doing with those screens – just watching, doing something creative or communicating with others.

Class discussion: How much time do you spend in front of a TV, computer or smartphone each day? Do your parents set any limits on your screen time? How much time do your parents spend in front of a screen? Is it unhealthy to spend a lot of time online? Is it making us fat? How much time do you spend on social media? Does social media discourage people from actually talking and interacting face-to-face? Are we becoming introverts?

Common Core State Standard
L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.
